Fire guts school; MLA donates relief fund

TALO, Oct 7: A devastating fire on Saturday night engulfed the government higher secondary school (GHSS) here in Lower Subansiri district.
The fire, which started around 11:30 pm, reduced the school’s meeting hall, library, administration block, and classrooms into ashes before any help could arrive.
The school is located around 22 kms from district headquarters Ziro.
Local MLA Likha Saaya along with ADC Toko Obi, the school’s principal Toko Tubi, and others rushed to Talo to take stock of the situation.
Saaya, who is himself an alumnus of the school, expressed deep anguish over the incident and announced Rs 50 lakhs from his non-BADP fund for rebuilding the school. He also donated Rs 10 lakhs from his MLALAD fund as immediate relief for procuring computers and furniture, and for building temporary sheds. He assured that he would provide all possible assistance for the rehabilitation of the students.
The MLA appealed to the people and the school’s alumni to also assist in rebuilding the school, and directed the district administration and the police to open an investigation and take action against whoever was responsible for starting the fire.
Till the filing of this report the cause of the fire could not be ascertained.
The school was one of the oldest in the Ziro-II belt. It has to its credit producing numerous technocrats, bureaucrats, lawyers, and doctors. (DIPRO)
