Govt urged to harness rivers’ hydropower potential

ITANAGAR, Oct 8: Former Kurung Kumey ZPC Sangha Tagik Masang urged the state government to harness the huge hydropower potential of the Kurung and the Kumey rivers.
Masang, who also is the secretary general of the All Arunachal Pradesh Panchayat Parishad, in a representation requested the chief minister to engage either the NEEPCO or the NHPC to conduct survey to facilitate exploitation of the hydropower potential of the two rivers.
“The power generated from the hydropower project(s), if developed, will not only meet the power requirement of around 15,000 populations of Kurung and Kumey valleys but also accelerate the pace of the development initiatives and enrich the state’s coffer,” Masang said in the representation.
He said Kurung Kumey district, which was created in 2001 after bifurcating Lower Subansiri district, is still facing acute power shortage.
