‘22.7 percent of all adults in Arunachal use tobacco’

SEPPA, Oct 24: According to a survey conducted by the GATS (2016-17), 22.7 percent adults in Arunachal Pradesh either smoke tobacco, or use smokeless tobacco.
This was informed by DPO DTCC (NTCP), Dr Kopi Gyadi during an anti -tobacco awareness programme-cum-rock show, organized by the State Tobacco Control Cell, Naharlagun in collaboration with the Voluntary Health Association of Arunachal Pradesh on the occasion of the 40th foundation day of the East Kameng Socio-Cultural Welfare Organisation at the Nyokum Yulo ground, here on Tuesday.
Addressing a huge gathering, Dr Gyadi informed that according to the survey, in Arunachal Pradesh, about 38.7 percent of men, 5.4 percent of women and 22.7 percent of all adults currently smoke tobacco.
And 50.1 percent of men, 27.7 percent of women and 39.3 percent of all adults currently use smokeless tobacco.
“In total 61.1 percent of men and 28.7 percent of women, and 45.5 percent of all adults either smoke tobacco or use smokeless tobacco,” he added.
He further stressed the need for authorities to collaborate with other organizations which may work together to make Seppa a tobacco-free district.
