ITANAGAR, Nov 4: The Northeast regional unit of the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development (GBPNIHESD) organised a couple of awareness programmes on the ‘Green good deeds (GGD)’ movement at Dera Natung Government College (DNGC) and Vivekananda Central School (VCS) here on 31 October and 1 November, respectively.
GGD is a societal movement launched by union environment, forests & climate change minister Harsh Vardhan to protect the environment and promote good living in the country. It comprises a list of over 500 actions prepared to motivate and involve the masses in environment protection.
The BRICS nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – have decided to include GGDs in the agenda of the next environment ministers’ meeting in 2019 in Brazil.
During the awareness programmes here, GBPNIHESD scientist Dr KS Kanwal introduced the participants to the movement, and urged them to sensitize the people to environmental protection and conservation of nature.
DNGC Principal Dr NT Rikam underlined the role of students in environment conservation activities, while the college’s Zoology HoD Dr P Nanda urged the people to change their behaviour and carry out their responsibilities in the era of climate change and global warming.
VCS chairman N Suresh Babu drew attention to environmental pollution and their solution, and expressed hope that the students would share the message with their friends and family.
Audio-visual presentations on saving energy, reducing garbage, conserving water and reducing air pollution at the personal level were showcased during the programmes, which were attended by over 200 students.
GBPNIHESD staff Drs Kesar Chand and Wishfully, along with engineer Om Prakash Arya and researchers were also present at the programmes.
