NAMSAI, Nov 19: The Namsai Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) signed an MoU with Shillong (Meghalaya)-based School of Livelihood and Rural Development on Monday for value addition, branding and marketing of different spices produced in the region.
On the same day, Chongkham MLA Chow Tewa Mein inaugurated the KVK’s administrative building and staff quarters, in the presence of local MLA Chow Zignu Namchoom.
The MLAs also inaugurated the Krishi Unnati Mela 2018 here, themed ‘Approaches for doubling the farmer’s income – the road ahead for farmer’s prosperity’, and visited the exhibition stalls set up by the ICAR, the NEIST, line departments, NGOs, SHGs, and others.
Mein expressed concern over the present situation of agriculture in the state, and congratulated the ICAR for organizing the event for the overall benefit of the farmers of the region.
Umiam (Meghalaya)-based ICAR-ATARI Director Dr BC Deka, the ICAR’s state centre’s Joint Director Dr H Kalita, Namsai DC Tapasya Raghav, KVK Head Dr Manish Kanwat and others were also present.
More than 1200 farmers from different villages of Namsai and neighbouring districts, along with more than 220 scientists, students and officials from various line departments, KVKs, FPCs and SHGs participated in the event.
