RUKSIN, Dec 20: A three-day block-level sports meet for the upper primary schools in Ruksin and Mebo blocks of East Siang district began on Thursday.
ADC Kabit Apang, who inaugurated the meet in Ruksin, advised the players to be ambitious in life and make their future bright through formal education combined with games and sports activities.
DDSE Jongge Yirang said his department seeks to find hidden sporting talents through such competitions, and that it is taking steps to “gradually forward them to district, state and national level sports fields.
“The block-level sports meets in three blocks under the district for the last three consecutive years were funded by the local MLAs from their LAD funds,” he said, adding that the education department would conduct the events from next year onwards.
Pasighat JNV Principal Satyendra Gupta said a number of students from the JNV have shown good performance in national level games besides participating the last edition of the state level Subroto Cup football tournament.
The block-level sports event includes football, race, jumps, discuss and shot-put throw, and kho-kho. Teams from 47 upper primary schools under the Ruksin education block are participating the event, which will conclude on 22 December.
In Mebo, the meet was inaugurated by local MLA Lombo Tayeng, who urged the students to “take up sports as part of their school education, as they can make a career out of it.”
