DUMPORIJO, Jan 12: A 35-year-old man succumbed to burn injuries he received in a fire that broke out at Fishery Colony here in Upper Subansiri district at around 11:40 am on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Banti Das, son of Kokon Das. He died on the spot, DIPRO reported.
The fire also devastated three RCC shops and four residential buildings. Several persons were injured in the incident, the report said, adding that the cause of the fire is being investigated.
Dumporijo ADC B Tawsik along with a relief team rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. The district administration has provided immediate relief materials to the affected people.
The homeless families have been given temporary shelter at the inspection bungalow here, the report added.
It bears mentioning that the year began with a series of devastations caused by fire accidents in various parts of the state.
Eleven shops and four rented houses at PK Point in Changlang market were reduced to ashes in an inferno that broke out at 7 pm on 4 January.
The fire was so devastating that it took almost three hours for firefighters, police and Assam Rifles personnel, and the locals to control it from spreading to other shops and the crafts centre hostel.
No one was injured but there was serious loss of properties.
On 6 January, a 45-year-old shopkeeper, identified as Ashim Ghosh, was charred to death in a fire accident which occurred at the market in Deomali subdivision of Tirap district.
Six shops were gutted in the fire, and a few others were partially damaged.
The fire was believed to have broken out at around 3:30 am, when most of people were fast asleep. It engulfed the entire area and reduced six shops to ashes even before the fire tender reached the spot.
On 8 January, a fire mishap in Papu village near Naharlagun gutted two OBT houses along with two SPT houses and an attached kitchen.
