PASIGHAT, Jun 25: Assam Police on Monday arrested six persons involved in the robbery incident at the Bogibeel bridge in Dhemaji district of Assam on 21 June, and seized the white Tata Nano car used by the gang.
The arrested persons have been identified as Azad Ali, Jintu Phukan, Akibul Rehman, Arsad Ahmad, Pankaj Das, and Dilwar Hussain, Dibrugarh police said.
On 21 June, one Dakjar Karlo of Likabali in Lower Siang district of Arunachal was intercepted and robbed by a five-member gang near the Bogibeel bridge when Karlo was on his way to Dibrugarh.
The investigating officer of the case said the accused
could have been arrested earlier if the victim had lodged the complaint at the nearest police station on the same day. The victim’s video statement on the robbery went viral on social media, which raised many questions over the aptitude of the police.
“We had to call the victim from Likabali to lodge an FIR on 23 June, and accordingly, the accused were arrested within a short time,” the police said.
Similar cases of robberies were also reported on social media and other platforms, not only in the Bogibeel area but also in the Lahoal-Dikom bypass area under Dibrugarh district.
“Therefore a team of police was alerted from Dibrugarh city to Lahoal to nab the culprits,” the police informed.
Assam Police have requested denizens and commuters travelling on the Kareng- Bogibeel route to report any such incident to the nearest police station as soon as possible to put a restraint on such crimes.
