DC asks KVK to expand activities

CHANGLANG, Jul 25: Expressing dissatisfaction over the limited area of operation of the Changlang Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Deputy Commissioner RK Sharma on Thursday suggested that the centre expand its scope of activities for the benefit of the farmers in the district’s remote hilly areas also.
Chairing a meeting on the activities the KVK undertook during the 2018-19 financial year, the DC said the centre’s operation is being confined to plain areas like Jairampur and Bordumsa.
“Research activities of the KVK should also be undertaken with respect to hilly areas for improving overall productivity of the district, and the farmers working in remote areas should not be deprived of the technical expertise and facilities being delivered by the KVK and the ATMA,” the DC said.
He also reviewed the status of the KVK’s ongoing schemes, and its 2019-20 annual action plan.
A detailed overview of the KVK’s activities in the areas of agronomy, animal sciences, horticulture, fisheries, extension works, etc, was presented during the meeting, along with the physical and financial reports of the activities undertaken under the ATMA.
The DC said “a major overhauling of the KVK and ATMA activities is required” to have a concrete data on the overall potential of cultivable areas in the district, productivity of the areas, backyard farming, maintenance of data of farmers’ incomes, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samann Nidhi, etc.
Sharma advocated conducting exhibitions and kisan melas to provide an opportunity to the farming community to showcase their produces, and asked the KVK, ATMA, agriculture and allied departments, etc, to converge their resources in executing schemes in order to achieve the government’s vision of doubling the farmers’ income by 2022.
NABARD DDM Kamal Roy apprised the meeting of the schemes under the farm sector promotion that can be supported by the NABARD, like the CM’s Sashakt Kisan Yojana and Krishi Samuh Yojana, agriculture clinics, formation of farmers-producers organisations, and such. (DIPRO)
