World Tourism Day celebrated

ITANAGAR, Sep 27: World Tourism Day was celebrated at the Rajiv Gandhi Government Polytechnic (RGGP) here on Friday.
The RGGP’s Travel and Tourism Management HoD (in-charge), Suwana Mungyak, spoke about how the celebration started across the world.
“Since 1980, World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation with a particular theme. This year, the theme is ‘Tourism and jobs: A better future for all’,” she said.
Travel and tourism management senior lecturer Rama Kant Mishra dwelt on a range of issues, such as the purpose of celebrating the day, jobs available in tourism, and the financial contribution of tourism to individuals and the country.
“Tourism is an employment generator. It is highly labour intensive and capital intensive,” he said.
Mishra lamented that India attracts fewer tourists “compared to the world tourism movement,” and said the country has a long way to go in developing tourism.
A short video on Govardhan eco-village was screened during the programme.
