KHONSA, 28 May: The district and sessions court here in Tirap district convicted an NSCN-K operative for wrongfully restraining a police officer, and awarded him 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI).
The court convicted Phamwang Lowang under Section 25 (1 A) of the Arms Act on Friday.
The incident had taken place in Kapu village on 18 February, 2014. Lowang, holding an assault rifle, had stopped Inspector Wangdaw Wangsu of the Khonsa police station while he was travelling to Longding in his personal vehicle along with one Ratnesh Kumar, and asked the police officer to reverse his vehicle and drop him (Lowang) at Borduria village.
The person accompanying the police inspector was dropped from the vehicle. On the way, Phamwang Lowang, observing a CRPF vehicle coming in the opposite direction, got down from the car and disappeared in the jungle.
He was apprehended two days later on 20 February, 2014, by a team of security forces from Borduria village. An MQ 5 rifle and ammunitions were seized from his possession. (DIPRO)
