ITANAGAR, 24 Jun: Governor BD Mishra’s wife, Neelam Misra felicitated local weavers as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration at the Raj Bhavan here on Friday.
The weavers were felicitated for their entrepreneurship and innovation, and for carrying forward the age-old indigenous traditions of loin loom weaving.
Misra exhorted the weavers to “preserve the age-old tradition which has always supported the womenfolk in their socioeconomic empowerment.”
She said that she herself has learned and is a practitioner of loin loom weaving in Arunachal, and added that the loin loom products of the women have “excellent designs, exotic motifs and unique texture, and the local weavers must promote it from local to global.”
She stressed on “inviting known business houses, so that they can buy directly from the weavers, without involving middlemen.”
Misra also emphasised on GI tagging of the indigenous loin loom products of Arunachal “for authenticity and genuineness, which will help in their saleability in the global market.”
She said that the government department concerned “must take interest in expediting this process.” (Raj Bhavan)
