PASIGHAT, 18 May: The College of Horticulture & Forestry (CHF) here in East Siang district has initiated promotion of walnut farming in eastern Arunachal, particularly in the Siang belt, under the DBT-funded project titled ‘Production of quality planting material of elite walnut cultivars and demonstration of improved agro-technology for walnut orchards in Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh’.
CHF Head Dr L Wangchu distributed 450 Chandler and Franquette walnut seedlings to progressive farmers of Riga village in Siang district, in the presence of Riga Farmers’ Organisation president
Tamat Tatak, on Thursday.
“There is a high potential of walnut production in Arunachal Pradesh. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research has identified Arunachal Pradesh for quality production of walnut for highly lucrative returns and reported the state to have 20,000 hectares of land suitable for walnut production,” the CHF informed in a release.
Currently, walnut is grown only in Tawang, West Kameng and Lower Subansiri districts.
