SWO, APSCW condemn crime
ITANAGAR, 21 Jul: The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) has expressed deep concern over the recent horrific Manipur incident, where two women from the Kuki-Zo community were paraded naked and gangraped.
“This unspeakable crime has shaken the entire region, leaving us all in disbelief and anguish. It reflects a grave failure of the state government’s machinery as such a heinous act was allowed to take place in broad daylight,” the APWWS said in a letter to the National Commission for Women chairperson on Friday.
“We are appalled by the lack of swift action against the perpetrators, and this raises serious doubts about the safety and security of women in the region,” it said.
“The current scenario in Manipur has left us extremely saddened, especially as women have borne the brunt of these atrocities. The people of Manipur are understandably anguished, and we join them in their sorrow during this troubling time in early May.”
“We, as the Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society, stand firmly against any form of violence and abuse directed towards women,” it added.
Vehemently condemning the incident, the APWWS urged the authorities to “take immediate and decisive action against all those involved in this heinous crime.”
“Justice must be served swiftly to ensure that such acts are not repeated, and to restore faith in the safety and protection of women in the region,” the letter read.
The APWWS also urged the state government to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of its citizens, and to implement measures that will prevent such atrocities from happening in the future.
“Our society stands united in demanding justice for the victims and a safer environment for all women and vulnerable communities,” it said, and added that “we extend our heartfelt support and solidarity to the people of Manipur during this distressing period. Together we must strive to build a society where women are respected, protected, and treated with dignity and equality.”
Huge shame on humanity: SWO
The Singpho Women’s Organisation (SWO) India has also vehemently condemned the horrific and barbaric Manipur incident and termed it “a huge shame on humanity and all of the people in the region.”
In a release, the SWO said, “Such heinous atrocities happening in our country are deeply shocking and the silence of the government for the last two months is infuriating.”
The SWO urged the Manipur government to initiate swift and strong action against the perpetrators who committed such heinous crimes.
“All perpetrators be identified, arrested and severe punishment be meted out. Safety and security be provided to all women in Manipur as many a time it’s been witnessed that women and young girls become the target of war, mercilessly being raped, killed and forced to bear untold violence in Manipur,” the organisation added.
Insult to women: APSCW
The Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has condemned in the strongest terms the incident of stripping of and sexual assault on two young women in Manipur, and said that “it is an insult to entire women fraternities.”
The commission demanded capital punishment for all the culprits involved in the heinous crime.
The APSCW also vehemently condemned the heinous crime committed by a former hostel warden in Shi-Yomi district, and requested the authorities concerned to take stern action against the accused.
