CHIMPU, 31 Jan: The GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Northeast Regional Centre (GBPNIHE-NERC) organised an awareness programme titled ‘From classroom to conservation: Empowering students towards the climate change issues in the Himalayan ecosystem’ at the KVK here on Wednesday.
Altogether 176 participants, including the principal, the vice principal, and teachers of the school attended the programme, which was aimed at enlightening the participants about the root causes, extensive impacts, and the significance of community-based adaptation strategies in confronting the challenges posed by climate change.
During the programme, GBPNIHE-NERC Scientist-C Tridipa Biswas provided insights into the causes and effects of climate change, with specific focus on the Northeast region.
Biswas underscored “the imperative role that students can play in fostering resilience within their communities,” the institute informed in a release.
Scientist-C Dr Wishfully Mylliemngap emphasised the importance of community engagement, and recommended “active student participation in collaborative efforts for addressing climate change alongside local communities,” the release stated.
Scientist-C Dr Sivaranjani S provided insights into “the current climate change impacts on the agriculture sector,” highlighting the need for adaptive measures in this critical area, the release said, adding that Scientist-C Dr Mriganka Shekhar Sarkar “shared significant visions into the effects of climate change on biodiversity, emphasising the interconnectedness of ecological systems.”
