ZIRO, 5 Mar: The Ziro Valley Charity Mission Society (ZVCMS) organised an awareness programme on cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants at the Seeh Lake conference hall here in Lower Subansiri district on Tuesday, in collaboration with Shillong (Meghalaya)-based North Eastern Region Resource Management Society.
During the programme, which was funded by the DoNER ministry and was attended by 22 participants from various villages of the Apatani valley, District Horticulture Officer Hibu Dante explained the importance and feasibility of cultivating medicinal and aromatic plants in the Ziro plateau.
He apprised the participants of the market value of the plants, “especially black zinger and English yew (Taxus baccata).”
“Black zinger reduces muscle pain, lowers blood sugar, ameliorates heart disease risk factors, and improves brain function,” said Dante, and informed that “anti-cancer compounds found in English yew are used in modern medicine.”
ZVCMS chairman Rubu Tadii also spoke.
Later, Dante distributed 350 kgs of black zinger and 300 saplings of English yew to the beneficiaries.
The ZVCMS also distributed 50 English yews to the Seeh Lake Committee.
