TRIHMS does not adhere to basic SOPs

Editor,

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding several critical issues observed at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), which are compromising patient care and safety.

The lapses in following the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adherence to the Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) norms are alarming and demand immediate attention.

Firstly, it has come to my notice that the SOPs for caretaking are not being adhered to. Specifically, blood samples are being handed over to attendants instead of being managed through the established medical channels. This practice not only undermines the integrity of medical processes but also poses a risk of contamination and errors. According to IPHS guidelines, the handling and transportation of samples must follow strict protocols to ensure their safety and accuracy (IPHS Guidelines for Health Care Facilities, Section 4.2.4).

Moreover, the behaviour of the emergency doctors at the institute is highly concerning. Reports indicate that these professionals are rude and disrespectful, treating attendants as though they are housekeepers rather than partners in patient care. Such behaviour is not only unprofessional but also detrimental to the healing environment, which should be characterised by compassion and respect. The Code of Ethics for Medical Professionals mandates respectful and empathetic interactions with patients and their families (Medical Council of India Code of Ethics, Section 7).

Additionally, the design and maintenance of the emergency wards fall short of the IPHS norms. The emergency block lacks proper segregation between the yellow and red zones, which is crucial for infection control and patient safety (IPHS Guidelines, Section 3.2.1).

Furthermore, the absence of adequate ventilation and lighting in the emergency block is a serious violation of IPHS standards, which require well-ventilated and properly lit spaces to ensure a safe and effective treatment environment (IPHS Guidelines, Section 3.2.2).

These issues not only jeopardise patient safety but also undermine the credibility of our healthcare system. It is imperative that the authorities at TRIHMS address these concerns promptly and ensure compliance with established standards. A thorough review and immediate corrective measures are essential to restore the facility’s reputation and ensure the delivery of quality healthcare.
