SUPLIANG, 18 Nov: A benchmark survey and monitoring of protected cultivation were conducted at Supliang village in Anjaw district, with the involvement of Dr. Debasis Sasmal, senior scientist and head of KVK Anjaw. The survey aimed to assess the progress of protected cultivation in the region.
Terenso Chaitom, a progressive farmer from the village, with support from KVK Anjaw, initiated the cultivation of tomatoes (Variety – Arka Rakshak). This variety, released by the Indian Institute of Horticulture, Bangalore, was introduced as a performance trial under protected cultivation. The trial has proven to be highly successful, and the crop is currently in the fruiting stage. Projections indicate that more than 8 kg per plant is expected from the cultivation.
Dr. S. Peter Singh, SMS (social sciences) provided valuable recommendations regarding the management of pests and diseases, suggesting control measures to prevent crop failure. Since the establishment of KVK Anjaw, such technological initiatives had not been previously undertaken. However, due to the growing interest among farmers, this activity was taken up to enhance both productivity and the income of the farming community.
