With the onset of the southwest monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal rainfall for most parts of the country. However, while regions across much of India may see adequate rain, Northeast India is expected to receive below-normal rainfall. Despite this, even a few days of heavy rain can be enough to throw the region into disarray.
This disruption is often the result of unplanned expansion of settlements, encroachment on riverbanks, and unchecked riverbed mining – all of which amplify the effects of monsoon flooding.
The latest incident was reported from Daporijo, where over 80 RCC and semi-RCC houses, along with other infrastructure, were affected as the Sigin River flooded its banks, inundating Polo Colony, Sigum Rijo, Sigin, and Bukpen Colony. In addition, the Charduar Road connecting Tawang has been cut off due to heavy landslides, disconnecting the district.
According to the IMD, from June to September 2025, most regions of the country are expected to experience normal to above-normal rainfall, except for parts of northwest and east India, as well as large areas of Northeast India, which are likely to witness below-normal rainfall.
For June 2025 specifically, countrywide rainfall is projected to be above normal. However, Northeast India is expected to receive below-normal rainfall. In terms of temperature, normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely across much of India, while above-normal maximum temperatures are forecast for many areas in northwest and Northeast India.
Although the IMD has forecast below-normal rainfall for the Northeast during the June-September period, the reality remains that even a few hours of heavy rain can disrupt daily life.
Monsoon preparedness has been reviewed in several districts. With IMD predictions becoming more accurate, local administrations are expected to stock up on essential food supplies and emergency items. Authorities should also begin identifying potential relief camps and temporary shelters, and prepare for the evacuation and relocation of residents from vulnerable areas across the state.
