PASIGHAT, 5 Mar: The district-level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament (VBYP)-2026, on the theme ’50 years of Emergency: Lessons for Indian democracy’, was organised at Jawaharlal Nehru College (JNC) here in East Siang district on Tuesday.

The programme was conducted by the NSS unit of the college, in collaboration with MY Bharat, Pasighat.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation of students, who actively engaged in discussions and deliberations on themes related to nation-building, democracy and the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

JNC Principal Dr Gindu Borang encouraged the youths to play active roles in strengthening democratic values, and to contribute meaningfully towards nation-building.

District Youth Officer Pawan Kumar Rav highlighted the importance of youths’ participation in policy discussions and leadership platforms. He said that initiatives like VBYP empower students to understand parliamentary procedures and democratic functioning at an early stage.

After competitive and engaging sessions, 10 participants were selected to represent the district at the forthcoming state-level VBYP competition.

In Lower Dibang Valley district, the district-level VBYP was conducted on Thursday at Jomin Tayeng Government Model Degree College (JTGMDC) in Roing.

The participants critically examined the historical context and implications of the 1975 Emergency, highlighting the strength and resilience of India’s democratic institutions. The discussions emphasised the significance of safeguarding civil liberties, and encouraged the youths to uphold constitutional values in the journey towards a Viksit Bharat.

The debate and deliberations were evaluated by a four-member jury panel comprising Parbuk ZPM Gemin Pertin, Roing ZPM Komji Linggi, Meka-Jia ZPM Tamanna Badu, and Arunachal Pradesh University (Pasighat) Associate Professor Dr Rajeko Dele.

Abida Begum, Eeha Mimi, Kesha Linggi, Aju Linggi and Mumbi Apum emerged the top speakers, demonstrating remarkable analytical ability and persuasive oratory on the theme of the Emergency.

In Lohit district, the district-level VBYP was held at Indira Gandhi Government College in Tezu.

Students actively participated in the youth parliament and expressed their views through parliamentary-style debates and discussions, reflecting the democratic functioning of the Indian Parliament.

The college’s Principal Dr Kangki Megu in his address emphasised the importance of youth participation in democratic processes, and encouraged students to develop leadership skills, critical thinking, and awareness about governance.

District Youth Officer Pawan Kumar Rav highlighted that the youth parliament provides an important platform for young people to express their views, enhance public speaking abilities, and strengthen their understanding of democratic institutions.

A panel of five jury members from the college evaluated the participants. The jury members comprised Dr MK Jana (commerce department), Dr PC Swain (political science department), Dr Tage Tama (education department), Dr Jeevantu Tikhak (history department), and Bharati Apum (Hindi department).

After careful evaluation, 10 outstanding participants were selected to represent the district at the state-level VBYP-2026.
