ITANAGAR, 6 Mar: In the run-up to the International Women’s Day, the sports department is celebrating the ‘Fit India Women’s Week’ with a three-day programme, focusing on women-centric health and fitness activities across the state.
The celebration commenced with a panel discussion on the theme ‘Breaking barriers in sports’ on 6 March.
The panel featured NERIST psychologist Dr Yuma Narah Camdir, SSA Miao sports physiotherapist Dr Mangesh Linggi, and RGU Food Technology Department Assistant Professor Dr Duyi Samyor.
Dr Camdir spoke on issues related to gender, sexuality, and mental health, highlighting the nuances of everyday life and how coaches and society can better support women athletes.
Dr Linggi focused on injury prevention and rehabilitation techniques, stressing the importance of proper training methods and timely medical care to ensure the wellbeing of athletes.
Dr Samyor guided the coaches on the importance of nutrition, particularly on how to derive balanced nutrition from traditional tribal diets and utilise readily available local food products to support athletes’ performance and overall health.
The panellists also interacted with coaches of Sangay Lhaden Sports Academy and the Sports Authority of Arunachal (SAA).
SAA Chairman John Neelam encouraged every coach to support women athletes.
The discussion also emphasised the importance of gender awareness, balanced nutrition, mental wellbeing, and preventive healthcare in sports, especially for women athletes.
The celebrations will continue over the next two days with various activities aimed at encouraging greater participation of women and girls in sports and fitness, while also promoting awareness about health, safety, empowerment, and holistic development.
