ITANAGAR, Jan 2: For reasons unknown, shops in the Capital Complex are reportedly not accepting ten-rupee coins.
Sources informed that even the railway counters at Naharlagun are not accepting such coins from passengers.
This practise by shopkeepers in Itanagar is believed to have begun a few months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s televised pronouncement of demonetization in November 2016.
However, it is reportedly being accepted in neighbouring state of Assam.
“In an unexplainable reason, the shopkeepers are not accepting ten-rupee coins and I don’t know why,” said Raju, a government employee.
“No one is accepting ten-rupee coins here, so are we” said a shopkeeper at Ganga.
On being inquired, the Itanagar branch State Bank of India Chief Manager B S Das said that there has been no such instruction or order from the Reserve Bank of India to not accept the particular denomination.
Das opined that the RBI regional office in Guwahati can create awareness along with the district administration if such a practise is doing rounds in the capital.
