MIAO, 15 Oct: The first IFS officer of undivided Tirap district and the first director of the DoTCL, Samjan Jongsam breathed his last at his residence here in Changlang district on 14 October, following prolonged illness.
He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Born in 1955, Jongsam pursued primary schooling in Yumchum village, and completed high schooling in 1973 from RK Mission, Purulia (West Bengal). He earned a BSc degree in agriculture from the Assam Agriculture College, Jorhat.
He joined government service as agriculture inspector at JNC, Pasighat, and then joined as assistant conservator of forest, and later on as DFO, CF and CCF. In 1996, he was selected as an IFS officer of the AGMUT cadre.
He served as field director of the Namdapha National Park in the winter of his service career.
Jongsam was the first IFS officer of undivided Tirap and the first director of the DoTCL. In 2011, he founded the Longchang Elite Society (LES) and became its founding president.
He was cremated at Yumchum village, 8 kms from here, on Friday.
In a condolence message, the LES expressed gratitude to late Jongsam “for playing a fatherly significant role for proper upbringing of Longchang society.
“Your untimely demise is a great loss to our society, which would be difficult for us to fill the void,” it said.
