103.42 acres of poppy crops destroyed in Lazu

LAZU, Mar 13: In its continued efforts to curb opium menace, Tirap district administration and Narcotic Control Board with help of security forces and state police destroyed standing poppy crops in 103.42 acres within Lazu circle.
An awareness meeting was also organized at Lazu on 12 February to educate the public on the ill effects of drug abuse. Teenagers were motivated to join the armed forces, police and other government services.
The bold step taken by the district administration has been viewed positively by the citizens and being appreciated, especially by the women, children and local NGOs and student organizations.
It is hoped that such campaigns will go a long way in eradicating the evils of drug addiction and drug trafficking from the society.
The drive was carried out from 9 to 12 March.
The DIPRO adds: Longding Deputy Commissioner VS Mallik reiterated that such drives will be carried out in every nook and corner of the district where 3.5 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed in remote villages. He sought the people’s cooperation in the district administration’s endeavour to make Longding opium free.
He applauded the village council, PRI members, women societies and student leaders of the village for extending their full cooperation during the drives.
