IMC to enhance salaries of ground staffers

ITANAGAR, 18 Jul: The Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) has unanimously resolved to enhance the salaries of its 204 ground staffers. The resolution in this regard was passed during a special session of the IMC held on Friday in the presence of all corporators and IMC officials.

Addressing the media after the session, IMC Mayor Tamme Phassang emphasized the crucial role played by the ground level workers in maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene in the city. “They are the real backbone of the IMC. While we sleep, they are out collecting garbage and ensuring that our city remains clean. It is unfortunate that despite their hard work, their salaries remain meagre,” he stated.

The mayor further informed that the entire IMC team, including officials and corporators, has decided to push for the enhancement of ground staffers’ salaries, bringing them at par with other employees of similar grade in different government departments.

“Urban Local Bodies Minister Balo Raja has also expressed strong support for this resolution and acknowledged that IMC staffers deserve pay parity,” the mayor informed.

He further appealed to the secretary, the commissioner, and all other officials concerned of the ULB to support the resolution.

Regarding Swachh Survekshan, Phassang highlighted the importance of public participation in achieving a cleaner city. “Unless citizens join hands with the IMC, our dream of a clean and green Itanagar cannot be fulfilled. We must follow the example of Indore – India’s cleanest city – where people practice jan bhagidari (public participation) and support municipal efforts instead of relying solely on the corporation,” he said.
