5 years of NEP-2020 celebrated

ITANAGAR, 31 Jul: As India commemorates the 5th anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, educators, institutions, and learners across the country reflect on a transformative journey that has redefined the landscape of Indian education.

Designed to be holistic, flexible, multidisciplinary, and aligned with the needs of the 21st century, NEP-2020 continues to pave the way for a more inclusive and learner-centric academic environment.

Speaking on this landmark occasion, Himalayan University (HU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Prakash Divakaran said: “The NEP-2020 has ushered in a paradigm shift – from rigid, exam-oriented systems to one that emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Over the past five years, it has empowered learners from all walks of life, promoted regional and indigenous knowledge systems, and strengthened the integration of technology into pedagogy.

“At Himalayan University, we have wholeheartedly embraced these reforms to ensure that our students are globally competent and socially responsible,” he said.

Key milestones achieved since the policy’s inception include introduction of multidisciplinary curricula and multiple entry/exit options in higher education; emphasis on foundational literacy and numeracy at the primary level; integration of vocational education and skill development from an early stage; greater focus on mother tongue and regional languages as medium of instruction; strengthened use of technology and digital platforms in education; and enhanced teacher training and capacity building.

“As NEP-2020 enters its sixth year, the focus remains on ensuring equitable access to quality education, fostering innovation, and building a knowledge-driven economy. With institutions like Himalayan University leading the implementation of these progressive reforms, the vision of a globally relevant and locally rooted education system is steadily becoming a reality,” the HU stated in a release.
