Livestock disease surveillance in Longding

KANUBARI, 8 Aug: Dr Joken Bam from Basar (Leparada)-based ICAR RC for NEH Region, along with Dr Tilling Tayo, assistant chief technical officer of the Longding Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)undertook a crucial livestock disease surveillance initiative through blood sample collection from cattle across several villages in Kanubari circle of Longding district.

The villages covered include Mopakhat, Olingtong, Luaksim, Sangsatham, and Longnaksi.

This field activity was part of a broader disease control and livestock health monitoring programme. Blood sample collection serves multiple important purposes. The samples are analyzed for a variety of viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections, enabling early identification of potential health threats. Timely detection allows authorities to implement rapid response measures such as vaccination, treatment, and quarantine, preventing the spread of disease to other animals and villages.

The health data derived provides insights into the general wellbeing of the livestock population in the region, and findings from the surveillance efforts aid government agencies and institutions like the ICAR in shaping targeted and effective animal health policies and agricultural strategies.

“Such proactive interventions are vital for sustaining the livelihoods of tribal and rural farming communities, where livestock plays an integral role in nutrition, income, and agriculture,” the KVK stated in a release.
