MAGO, Jul 3: The ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR-NRCY) conducted an awareness camp on yak health management at remote Mago village in West Kameng district on 2 July.
The camp was aimed at supporting the local yak herders and assisting them in protecting their animals against common and frequent diseases.
Situated at an altitude of 12,500 mtrs above sea level, Mago is one of the most interior villages of the district, where yak farmers of both West Kameng and Tawang districts raise their yaks during summer months.
After four to five months of winter at mid-altitude, the herders move towards higher altitudes as their yaks are unable to survive at higher temperatures during summer. Besides, the animals also experience parasitic and other infectious diseases with the onset of summer.
During the programme, 80 yak farmers from Lengurr, Lagam, Chuna, Nurie Mago and Durie Mago were briefed on the scientific management of yaks and the control measures against diseases. The farmers were also provided with concentrate yak feed and common salt under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) of the institute.
Lagam gaon burah Sonam Norbu commended the efforts of ICAR-NRCY Director Dr P Chakravarty for providing TSP benefits to his locality for the first time.
Senior scientist Dr D Medhi, Dr Juwar Doley and Tsering Khandu, along with staffers of the institute assisted in carrying out the programme.
