Feud leads to grievous attack

NAHARLAGUN, Aug 27: One Bomli Belo alias Kali Belo was brutally attacked with a machete (dao) by one Nyaye Lingri on the night of 25 August, in Lekhi village here.
According to a complaint lodged by the brother of the victim, Lingri came to their residence in Lekhi at around 10.30 pm, and had a heated argument with Belo.
Soon after, Lingri took out a machete from the boot of his car, chased Belo with it into the house, and attacked him several times, causing multiple injuries.
Capital Superintendent of Police M Harsha Vardhan informed that the Nirjuli police received the complaint at around 11 pm.
“Police team reached the spot and the victim was shifted to hospital in Naharlagun in police vehicle. He was grievously injured due to assault using a dao,” the SP informed.
Two police teams were immediately formed to arrest the accused, whose house was found locked. He was later found at around 3 am from Pappu Nallah area and arrested.
Reportedly, both the victim and accused are from Dumporijo area, are known to each other, and had an old animosity.
“In fact, the accused stayed in the victim’s house as a tenant also for some time. They have some old animosity which led to this incident. Even now, the accused and the victim lived in the same neighbourhood,” the SP said.
He assured that “there is absolutely no communal angle in this matter and it is a result of a personal feud.”
The weapon of offence (the machete) has been recovered from the accused, and the accused is now in judicial custody.
The victim, who is around 40 years old, has been referred to a hospital in Guwahati.
