ITANAGAR, Feb 7: Ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the northeastern states of Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Thursday threatened unrest in the region if the citizenship amendment bill (CAB) is passed in the Rajya Sabha.
In a press release, the NESO demanded that the CAB not be introduced in the Rajya Sabha.
“NESO would like to send a clear message to the prime minister and to the government of India that the indigenous peoples of the Northeast will not accept this draconian bill,” it said.
Reiterating its strong opposition to the CAB, the NESO said the passing of the bill in the Lok Sabha on 8 January, “in spite of protests from the indigenous people of the region and some state governments and political parties,” was another example of political injustice.
“This only goes to show that the government of India has no regard for the indigenous peoples of the Northeast, but rather this move is intentionally done to reduce the indigenous peoples of the Northeast to a minority in our own land,” the NESO said.
