NAMSAI, Mar 18: Attending the Vijay Sankalp programme organised by the Namsai unit of the BJP here on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein introduced political debutant Jummum Ete Deori as the BJP’s Lekang candidate.
Jummum is the daughter-in-law of late Omem Moyong Deori, the first woman parliamentarian from Arunachal Pradesh.
After a stint of five consecutive wins since 1995 in Lekang assembly constituency, Chowna Mein had vacated his seat. He will be contesting the assembly election from Chowkham assembly constituency this year.
Veteran lawmaker from Chowkham assembly constituency Chow Tewa Mein has retired from active politics and vacated the seat for his brother, Chowna.
Sitting Namsai MLA Chow Zingnu Namchoom will contest again from Namsai.
Back in 2014 all the three seats were wrested on Congress tickets.
Addressing party workers and supporters, Chowna said that his prime objective was to make Namsai a model district with all modern amenities.
He also lashed out at the Congress party, particularly its leadership for “spreading lies and misinformation” regarding the permanent resident certificate issue which saw unprecedented protests leading to the loss of valuable lives.
He said, “The propaganda was to create law and order problems so that they (Congress) could demand for President’s Rule and malign the image of the BJP Government, but it did not materialise.”
Chowna said that “enough evidence has been found and after the BJP returns to power after the elections, the culprits will be booked and everything will be crystal clear.”
Also addressing the gathering, Deori said she was overwhelmed by the support of the people in the constituency, particularly women.
“Keeping aside petty differences, the support of the women has motivated my maiden foray into the assembly elections,” she said.
Namchoom also gave an outline of the programmes and policies of the present government and steps taken to root-out corruption and nepotism.
Condolences were also paid to former defence minister late Manohar Parrikar, who passed away on 17 March after prolonged illness.
Among others, BJP district president Chow Sujana Namchoom, state secretary in-charge of Namsai Junty Singpho, and office bearers, members from various notches and mandals were present on the occasion.
