ITANAGAR, May 5: The BJP’s MLA candidate for the Liromoba assembly constituency in West Siang district, Nyamar Karbak, has said he would initiate legal action against the Intellectual Support Group (ISG), accusing the group of unnecessarily dragging his name into an incident which he claimed he was not even aware of.
The ISG, which claims to represent the Yomcha, Liromoba, Darak, Lower Kamba and Upper Kamba circles, had on Saturday alleged that police personnel ignored procedures while carrying out raids in Tego Gamlin and Laggi Gamlin villages of the district, and had also raised suspicion that Karbak was behind the raids.
Alleging “politically motivated vendetta by the ruling party,” the ISG in a representation to the director general of police had stated that “the raid was presumably carried out at the behest of Karbak.”
Tego Gamlin and Laggi Gamlin are the ancestral villages of the National People’s Party’s candidate Jarpum Gamlin.
Karbak, who is also the sitting MLA of Liromoba, in a statement on Sunday said that, as far as he knew, the police were in search of criminals who had committed robbery and severely assaulted one Bajum Bogo, the BJP’s Liromoba mandal president, at the Hotel Min Ta in Aalo in March this year.
“I am of the belief that the police do not require a search warrant if there is credible information about the presence of criminals in any area. No one is above the law and our society is not governed by thugs and criminals. If someone has committed a crime, they will eventually have to face the consequences,” Karbak said, and described the ISG as “a self-proclaimed and a political group”.
“Till today some important questions remain unanswered. Who was responsible for attacking and robbing Bajum Bogo? Who is shielding the alleged accused from the police? Who is creating unnecessary obstruction in police investigation into the case? Who is feeding one-sided and biased stories about the Liromoba AC to the media?” he demanded to know.
