MECHUKA, Oct 14: ‘Mountain Terrain Biking (MTB)-Hornbill’s Flight’ Mechuka to Itanagar, the first ever International MTB Race in the North East began here with Brig. T. S Budhawar(SM) and Assistant Deputy Commissioner, T Loya formally flagging off the race on Saturday.
About 80 participants are taking part in the 7 day race beginning Oct 14 from Mechuka Valley and culminating at Itanagar on Oct 20 next by covering a distance of approximately 730 Kms.
The event has three categories which comprises of Men’s and Women’s Open besides Best Partnership category. First stop for the riders is at Yapik after which they will stop at various places each about (80-100 KM) respectively.
Apart from Indian participants many international riders from Portugal, Germany and Nepal are participating in the race. From Arunachal Rubi Lombo and two professional MTB riders, Ahonda Menjo (21) and Takar Tamut (25) are taking part in the race.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the race, Rubi said that though she was familiar with the rough terrain the more professional and experienced riders would find the track much easier. She hoped to give her best shot and complete the race along with others.
Earlier, SSB Commandant, Rajesh Thakur who is in organizing committee of the event informed that the race is the brainchild of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju who hoped to promote the sport in the state in a larger way and to promote tourism awareness in the state. Thakur further said, ‘This sport will not only help promote fitness in youngsters but also prevent them from going astray.’ He also hoped to continue organizing similar events at other places of the state in future.
The awards will be presented to the riders during the valedictory function of the event which is scheduled to be held at state Banquet Hall in Itanagar on Oct 20 next.
