ROING, Dec 7: Swift action by the police helped in cracking a case of daylight robbery and attempted murder here in Lower Dibang Valley district on Tuesday last.
According to police reports, one Chandan Gogoi, from Chapakhowa in nearby Assam, had come to the SBI ATM here to withdraw money. On his way back from the ATM, at around 1 pm, he was stopped by an unknown local boy, who requested him for a lift to his uncle’s place which he said fell on the same route.
The boy also used Gogoi’s phone to make a call to his friend, who later joined them on the way.
Gogoi’s ordeal began from there as the two miscreants took him to an abandoned structure in the jungle near the bypass road. He was assaulted and was robbed of all his belongings, including his scooter.
Reportedly, the two miscreants are drug users and history-sheeters, and contemplated killing Gogoi to avoid exposure.
However, Gogoi managed to escape, and after over two hours reached the township area, and immediately reported the matter to the police.
A team of police, led by DSP (P) Kamdam Sikom and SI Abraham Taying, then sprang into action and raided the crime site. The miscreants had, however, fled the scene before the police arrived.
The police sought more details of the robbers’ appearance from Gogoi, and, based on the information, they zeroed in on one of the assailants.
The suspect’s house was raided, and the scooter, mobile phone, cash, and other personal belongings of the victim were recovered from there.
A criminal case has been registered against the duo.
The SI informed that the miscreants had been arrested previously in various other cases, and were at large on bail.
In another case, the police here arrested one Borto Morang for assaulting one Naso Litin of Jia village, when the latter had gone to visit a friend in Shantipur area.
Morang had also snatched Litin’s mobile phone and Rs 20,000 in cash.
A case has been lodged against the accused at the police station here.
