ITANAGAR, Dec 24: The Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs (LMCA) department celebrated National Consumer Day with the theme ‘Emerging of Digital Market: Issue and Challenge in Consumer Protection’ across Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday.
It was on this day in 1986 that the Consumer Protection Act got the assent of the President of India. The day is celebrated to remind the consumers of their rights and duties provided under the Act.
In Naharlagun, the department organised a three-day programme, from 22 to 24 December, at its consumer care Centre (CCC), which included a training programme and discussions on consumer protection.
A good number of consumers visited the CCC during the programme to have their confusion cleared. Some of the aggrieved consumers were guided on resolving their issues through the correct procedure, such as approaching the District Consumer Forums with their grievances.
On Saturday, Controller of LMCA, Hoktum Ori, flagged off a publicity campaign featuring a vehicle with various information and tips on consumer protection. The campaign continued at all the sector roads and other important locations in the Capital Complex.
The department also carried out an extensive publicity campaign through the print and electronic media like Doordarshan and FM radio.
In Lohit, a consumer awareness campaign along with an essay competition for students was organized at the VKV in Tafragam to mark the day.
Assistant Controller of LMCA, Debasish Ghosh,highlighted the activities carried out by the department to protect consumers, and gave a demonstration on packaged commodities, MRP, checking of petrol pumps, and the like.
Legal Metrology Inspector Jimu Mele presented a brief on the theme of the celebration.
The VKV’s Principal, KK Reena, also spoke.
Around 300 students along with teachers participated in the event.
