36 acres of poppy plantation destroyed in Lazu

KHONSA, Mar 9: Tirap District Administration with help of Police, Assam Rifles and Nocte Women Society destroyed poppy plants illegally cultivated across 36 acres of lands in eight villages of Lazu area.
While leading the team, Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon interacted with the public of Lazu and assured to initiate for replacement of the existing opium poppy cultivation with other cash crops in the district. He informed that the poppy plant destruction drive would be continued till 12 March, for which, he sought the civil society’s cooperation.
The DC also appealed to all NGOs, religious leaders, Chiefs, GBs, PRI leaders and members of Lazu area to come forward and join in the fight against opium problem.
DHO Henrik Basar, who accompanied the team, also interacted with the poppy growers to adopt alternative cultivation like large ginger, large chilly and large cardamom, for which his department will extend all possible help. DIPRO
