PASIGHAT, Jul 12: One Bukyang Yirang (45) of Ngopok village under Mebo police outpost in East Siang district has been arrested for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl child on Tuesday.
Police said the accused committed the crime when the minor was alone watching TV at her home on Tuesday morning. The parents, who were out in their paddy field at the time of the incident, were told about the incident by their daughter.
The victim’s father later lodged an FIR at the Pasighat police station against Yirang, and the police arrested the accused under Section 376 of IPC R/w Sections 4/6 of the POCSO Act.
The police said the accused confessed to his crime during interrogation. Yirang was produced before the magistrate on Thursday, and remanded to judicial custody.
The police also conducted medical examination of the victim, and collected evidence.
Meanwhile, various women organizations of the district have come down heavily against the accused, and have appealed to the police and the administration to award exemplary punishment to him.
