TEZU, Aug 18: The Arunachal State Badminton Association (ASBA)’s major event, the Dorjee Khandu Memorial State Badminton Championship, is beginning here, the district headquarters of Lohit, on 25 August.
The 6th edition of the championship will see around 350 competitors from 22 districts step out onto the court, informed ASBA joint secretary Penya Bagra.
The players have been divided into different categories, depending on their ages.
It will be held for both boys and girls and singles and doubles U-13, U-15, U-17, U-19 years, and senior men and women’s singles and doubles. The mixed doubles event will be held for U-19 and senior category only, Bagra said.
The matches will be played at Kaliko Pul Memorial Indoor Badminton Hall, Tankakso Badminton Club, and Khoraliang Badminton Club.
Besides, a state Grade-2 badminton umpire examination will also be held.
The championship will be supervised and conducted by renowned international referee H Gyanesowar Singh, and national umpires Penya Bagra, Tania Yassap and Manjit Pritam Bora.
On 14 August, the ASBA held a meeting with the Lohit District Badminton Association (LDBA), the organizer of the event, to review the preparations. Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Dr Mohesh Chai, who is also the local MLA, was also present in the meeting.
The minister assured the ASBA that he and the administration would extend all possible help and support for smooth organization of the event.
The six-day event is being organized by the LDBA, under the aegis of the ASBA.
