CHESSA, Aug 21: A peaceful protest is underway near Chessa in Papum Pare district, bordering Assam, against the suspected rape and murder of a minor girl whose body was found on the Arunachal Pradesh side of Rajghar Ali road here on Sunday.
Hundreds of students from the lower primary, middle and secondary schools of Simalguri on Monday carried out a peace march demanding justice for the deceased, and to promote peace and tranquility in the area.
Women’s groups of the area are also organizing protests and dharnas with support from the residents.
Naharlagun SDPO Make Bui, who was present at the rally, informed that the situation in the area is under control and no untoward incident has been reported.
Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police on both sides of the boundary. The North Lakhimpur (Assam) ASP and the Bihpuria OC along with Bui are monitoring the situation in the area.
Bui said a meeting with the women’s groups and residents of the area was held on Monday near Chessa, on the Assam side, during which the people demanded that the culprit(s) be arrested within a week. The locals also demanded regular patrolling by the police of both the states, and called for demolishing the gumtis (small shop) along Rajghar Ali road which allegedly sell alcohol.
The locals also demanded increasing the strength of the Arunachal Pradesh Police in Chessa.
