SALARI, Sep 28: Tezpur (Assam)-based defence research laboratory of the DRDO organised a ‘DRDO-kisan-vigyan-jawan mela’ here in West Kameng district on 23 September.
Themed ‘Technologies for doubling farmers’ income’, the programme was organized to acquaint the locals, farmers and jawans with the ongoing activities of the laboratory and the latest technological developments in various fields for improving their socioeconomic status.
Special emphasis was given on post-harvest processing and value-addition to their farm produces since West Kameng is a fruit and vegetable growing belt of Arunachal Pradesh.
Activities such as a kisan gosthi to solve farmers’ issues, a competition of farm produce among farmers, exhibition of technical stalls, medical and veterinary camp, science quiz for school students, and cultural presentations were organized during the mela. Forty-five farmers won awards in the competition for the best farm produce.
Exhibition stalls were set up by the ICAR’s Dirang-based National Research Centre on Yak (NRC-Y), the agriculture department, and the defence research laboratory.
A medical and veterinary health camp was conducted by the 30th Bn SSB.
Ten progressive farmers from different villages of West Kameng were felicitated for their commendable efforts in various fields of agriculture.
The GB of Dhikiyang village earlier inaugurated the mela in the presence of West Kameng DC Sonal Swaroop.
Around 250 farmers, state officials, and army and paramilitary personnel participated in the mela.
