No studies on living conditions of STs in NE: Centre

NEW DELHI, Jan 2: Responding to a question by MP Ninnong Ering whether the Central government has undertaken/proposes to undertake any study to assess the living conditions of the Scheduled Tribes in the North-Eastern states of the country, Union MoS for Tribal Affairs Jaswantsinh Bhabhor said that there was no such study.
However, the minister said that there is considerable improvement in the living conditions of the Scheduled Tribes (STs) across the country, including North East states, Union MoS for Tribal Affairs Jaswantsinh Bhabhor informed the Parliament on 31 December, 2018.
‘However, there are still gaps as compared to figures of total population,’ the minister said and added that the government has adopted a multi-pronged strategy for overall development of tribal people across the country, including North East states, which includes support for education, health, sanitation, water supply, skill deve-lopment, livelihood, etc.
Bhabhor further informed that major part of infrastructure development and provision of basic amenities in tribal region in the country is carried out through various schemes under concerned central ministries and state governments, while the ministry of tribal affairs provides additive to these initiatives by way of plugging critical gaps.
The minister also cited various schemes/progra-mmes being implemented by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
