KHUPA CAMP, Jan 24: Sixty-nine farmers, farmwomen and rural youths from villages in Chaglongam, Hayuliang and Manchal circles participated in a ‘training-cum-input distribution programme of kiwi fruit and planting materials’ organised here by the Anjaw KVK on Wednesday.
Addressing the participants, ICAR Basar Centre Joint Director Dr H Kalita highlighted the importance of kiwi and walnut cultivation, and explained artificial pollination used in kiwi plantation.
Hayuliang ADC Sode Potom spoke on the potential of kiwi “to be the next promising crop of the district,” and commended the KVK officials for transferring need-based technologies to the farming community.
Horticulture scientist Rebecca Eko made a PowerPoint presentation on “packaging and practices of kiwi fruit,” and enumerated the different species of kiwi, their planting season, planting distance, pruning, etc.
KVK Head Dr Manish Kanwat also spoke.
Six thousand kiwi fruit and 1200 walnut planting materials were later distributed among the farmers.
