Ziro, Jan 30: The training cum distribution programme for plantation of walnut and kiwi under NEC project ‘Integrated Horticulture including Fisheries for North Eastern Hill region’ was conducted on 28 January at Ziro in Lower Subansiri district.
The training was organized by the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Arunachal Pradesh centre, Basar in coordination with the kiwi growers’ cooperative society, Lower Subansiri district.
The training was attended by 46 farmers, who were provided with 4, 000 grafted seedlings of kiwi and 1, 300 seedlings of walnut.
Kago Kampu, treasurer of the Ziro commercial group, briefed about problems being faced by the farmers in grading and packaging fruits. She requested for installation of grading machine and packaging unit for the welfare of kiwi growers of the district.
Gyati Loder, secretary of the Kiwi Growers Cooperative Society, Lower Subansiri, requested the ICAR to provide local farmers with low-cost poly-house to promote off-season cultivation of vegetables.
Dr Rajesh A Alone, Scientist (Agroforestry), ICAR AP Centre, Basar, briefed about the research and extension activities being carried out by ICAR Arunachal Pradesh centre for welfare of the farming community of the state.
He also elaborated on the activities being carried out in various districts of Arunachal Pradesh under TSP and NEC projects for socio-economic development of tribal farmers.
Dr Jitendra Kumar, Scientist (Soil Physics), ICAR AP Centre, Basar emphasized on proper soil sampling and soil testing for better nutrient management. He advised the farmers to adopt vermicomposting for better soil health.
