Mopin celebrated with traditional gaiety

ITANAGAR, Apr 5: Mopin festival of the Galo community was celebrated at the Mopin-Solung ground here on 5 April with traditional fervour and gaiety.
Mopin is an agricultural festival celebrated for a good harvest, good health, peace and prosperity. It includes rituals for fertility of crops, plants, animals and human beings.
Participating in the festivities here, Chief Secretary Satya Gopal called on the revellers not only to preserve their traditions but also to promote them.
“Festivals are not platforms for interaction and merrymaking but also for learning one’s tradition and culture,” Gopal said, and urged the youths to retain the age-old practices.
People from all walks of life attended the celebration, and witnessed the traditional dance performances.
In Tirap district, the Galo community celebrated Mopin festival in a befitting manner at the civil judge residential complex in Khonsa.
Greeting the Galo people, DC PN Thungon said, “Galos are traditionally rich and peace-loving people and the dances and songs of Mopin are very popular in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.”
Thungon prayed to almighty Donyi-Polo for peace, brotherhood and a bumper harvest in the years to come.
Earlier, the festival’s organising committee president, Henrik Basar, highlighted the significance of Mopin.
