NES calls for peaceful polls

ITANAGAR, May 9: The Nyishi Elite Society (NES) has urged the contesting candidates, political parties and party workers concerned to ensure peace and harmony in Kurung Kumey and Kra Daadi districts.
“Elections must be fought with a democratic spirit where winning and losing are imminent, and the candidates must be well-prepared to face either end. Whoever takes the law in their hand shall be
squarely responsible for further ramifications,” NES president Bengia Tolum stated in a release on Thursday.
“Winning elections is important, but maintaining the dignity and reputation of the community as well as our sacred birthplace is more important than winning an election as elections come and go,” the NES said.
On Wednesday, an NES team led by Tolum had called on the chief secretary and conveyed its concern over the problems pertaining to the election process in Kra Daadi and Kurung Kumey.
The NES had requested the CS to convene a meeting of all the contesting candidates for a closed-door discussion to initiate confidence-building measures to ensure transparent, free and fair elections.
“We don’t want any more loss of lives and property, and the rule of law must prevail,” the NES president had said during the meeting.
