World Environment Day celebrated

ZIRO, Jun 6: Students of Kids Quest School in Abulyang here in Lower Subansiri district performed road shows to create awareness on air pollution on the occasion of the World Environment Day on Wednesday.
The roadshow, which started from the Hapoli main market area, traversed the nook and corner of Ziro-Hapoli township. The children played guitars and pianos and sang songs highlighting the theme of environmental protection. After the performances, free saplings were distributed to the public.
In Lohit HQ Tezu, the forest division organized a short marathon, themed ‘Run to beat air pollution’, to create awareness about global air pollution. Officers and staffers of various departments, and members of NGOs turned up in large numbers to participate in the event.
The run began at the circuit house and culminated at the botanical garden, where the participants planted saplings.
Around 1000 saplings of Azhar, Arjun, Bhakul, etc, trees were distributed among NGOs, institutions and the public in and around Tezu for planting.
Speaking on the occasion, Lohit DFO S Manyu highlighted the importance of World Environment Day celebration, and urged the residents to make the area free from air pollution.
IAF officer Sunny Kumar Singh of the Lohit district administration also spoke.
The NERIST cell of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan also organized a tree plantation drive at the government middle school in Tigdo in Papum Pare district to mark the World Environment Day on 5 June.
The programme was attended by villagers, and students and staff of the school.
