ITANAGAR, Jun 22: Security forces have apprehended a self-styled major general of the NSCN (K) Yung Aung (YA) faction, identified as Yanghang @ Mopa, who was responsible for the ambush on the 40 Assam Rifles which had led to the death of two soldiers, according to a defence source.
The Army’s Eastern Command GOC-in-C, Lt Gen MM Naravane, had announced a cash reward of Rs 5 lakhs for information leading to the apprehension of the insurgents responsible for the ambush.
Two other operatives of the outfit were also apprehended. The trio was apprehended from the Aboi-Mon road in Nagaland on 21 June.
“The self-styled general is the senior-most officer of the NSCN (K) Yung Aung faction, who is considered responsible for the ambush on the 40 Assam Rifles on 25 May in the general area of Tobu in Mon district of Nagaland, where they had two fatal casualties,” the source said.
“Yanghang was also the chief architect of extortions and the perpetrator of many heinous crimes, and was controlling the operations of the faction in Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh,” said the source.
“This is a massive victory for the security forces and the state governments,” it said, and reaffirmed the security forces’ resolve to continue their operations to protect the citizens from terrorism.
The security forces have appealed to all the NSCN cadres to “give up the futile course of violence and join the initiative of the government of India in the ceasefire efforts to bring peace and development.”
