WAKRO, Jun 26: A daily wage earner, identified as Padam Bahadur Sonar alias Vishal Sonar (18), has been arrested by the police for allegedly attempting to rape a young woman in Wakro, in Lohit district, on the morning of 25 June.
Two others, identified as Nitin Karmakar (18) and Anuj Deka (26), have also been arrested for their alleged involvement in the crime.
Lohit SP DW Thongon informed that the police received a complaint from the family of the 20-year-old woman. Reportedly, she was dragged by Sonar, the main accused, from near the community health centre in Wakro town, and forcibly taken to a nearby jungle.
“Fortunately, a young girl saw the woman being dragged away, and informed her brother. When he went to investigate, the accused saw him, and fled deep into the jungle,” informed the SP.
Soon, the police were informed, and a massive search was launched, with assistance from the locals, in the jungle, and the main accused was apprehended on the same day.
While the FIR mentions only one accused, the police arrested the two others based on information the accused provided during interrogation.
The three men were taken into judicial custody, and are currently lodged in the district jail in Jully, near Itanagar.
The survivor, who received external injuries from her assailant, was given medical aid in Wakro, but was then referred to a hospital in Dibrugarh, Assam.
According to her family, she is currently stable and out of danger, the SP informed, adding: “Investigation is on, and the police are yet to take her statement on the incident.”
