PASIGHAT, 13 Jul: Onion cultivation in East Siang district is showing promising results, which has encouraged the College of Horticulture and Forestry (CHF) here to further extend its onion project to Riga circle in Siang district.
The CHF is all set to extend its ‘onion demonstration project’ under the NES component to Riga circle in Siang district, and for this, 10 hectares of land on hill slopes have been earmarked, Dr Chandra Deo, assistant professor at the CHF, said.
He said 20 farmers in East Siang district started onion cultivation after launching of the project three years ago and their cultivation showed good results.
Dr Deo, who is looking after the project as its principal investigator, said that the onion project covers almost all the districts of the state, and that the hilly terrains and plain areas have been found to be suitable for onion and garlic cultivation.
“We are supplying improved and advanced variety of onion seeds to the farmers for cultivation, apart from providing technical assistance and implements to them,” he said.
The project, funded by Pune (Maharashtra)-based Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, aims at popularizing onion cultivation in Arunachal and other NE states.
The first phase of the project was launched three years ago.
