Fire safety awareness progs

DAPORIJO, 18 Nov: The Upper Subansiri district police, led by SP Thutan Jamba, in collaboration with District Disaster Management Officer Annie Yangfo, Daporijo Electrical Subdivision JE Michi Yapa, and Daporijo Fire Station OC Buru Maling conducted fire safety awareness programmes in different locations and colonies here on Saturday.

The programmes were aimed at creating awareness with regard to preventing fire accidents.

The SP said that “Upper Subansiri, especially Daporijo town, has recorded the highest number of fire incidents in the last two years in the state. “Fire incident is human induced hazard, which is caused mostly by people. All colonies and sectors of Daporijo town are prone to fire accident,” he said, and urged the people to be proactive in preventing fire accidents.

DSP Gamli Loyi appealed to the people to keep a fire extinguisher in their homes and shops to extinguish flames and prevent them from spreading.

The fire station OC urged the people to “form volunteers in colonies and sectors to help fire service staffers during fire incident, as staffers in Daporijo and Dumporijo towns are less in number.”

Daporijo Police Station OC Token Dubi urged the people to “stop haphazard parking in colonies and sectors to pave way for easy entry of fire tender during a fire incident,” while the DDMO said that “fire accidents mostly start from local kutcha houses, made from locally  available materials which are vulnerable to catch fire immediately.”

She advised the people to “increase the size of the hearth (local chulha or mirem) and increase the height of the rapko (a sack for drying meat hung above a local chulha),” among other things, while the JE said that “most fire accidents are caused due to electrical short circuit and overload.”

He urged the people to “do proper earthing while connecting wiring in houses, shops and other establishments; use proper rated wire; and not overload the current by using multiple appliances at a time.” (DIPRO)
